Nichole | Dcember 2017 Featured Member

Nichole Is Our Featured Member for December!

Name: Nichole Garrett

Age: 33

Occupation: HR Manager

I’ve been a member of Face Your Fears Athletics for: Since the beginning when Ben was over at Valencia, so almost 5 years

My first impression of FYFA was: Everyone is so friendly and awesome, but you want me to do what?! As soon as I did it, I was hooked!

My fitness goals are: To be better everyday, to inspire others and to look good naked.

My proudest moment or accomplishment at FYFA has been: There’s so many! Getting a faster time than Dave on 1776 a couple years ago is up there. Once you get that approving head nod, you feel like you’ve made it! Recently, hitting a #260 box squat was so freaking cool! Also, all the fundraising we’ve done and continue to do make me proud to belong here.

My favorite skill/workout is: Oddly enough, I actually like burpee pull-ups. Lunges are a given, ha! Box jumps also rank pretty high up there.

My favorite memory at FYFA has been: Again, there are so many! All the crazy laughs and jokes during class are the best. Like the time K-Fig, Kevin and I were discussing which actor as a superhero was the most attractive. We were laughing so hard and I darn near dropped the barbell on my face while benching. Or the time a class following the one I took was all guys, there was some dumbbell something or other as the warm up. All the guys got their dumbbells and Ben asked me, I was stretching, to tell the guys what weight I used. I did and they all threw down their dumbbells and said dammit Nichole! Then they all had to get heavier weights.

My favorite Ben-ism is: Theres too much talking and not enough working! Which is usually followed by him chucking a marker. Or the, “This is not a democracy, it’s a dictatorship and I’m the dick!” When we complain about his definition of fun.

My diet looks like (Paleo, Zone, Clean Eating, etc.): I try to maintain an 80/20 mentality, but that doesn’t always happen. It’s all about moderation.

My favorite food is: Carbs, I like carbs. Especially in the form of Oreos. And steak. I could eat one everyday.

Something you’d never guess about me is: I hate most vegetables and all seafood, barf! I know all the words to Get Low, Glory is my favorite movie and I’d pick an action/war movie over a chick flick any day.

The top item on my bucket list is: To leave the country. To park my happy pants on a beach where a very attractive man, in a very tiny speedo, serves me tasty drinks, with cute umbrellas in them all day long.

Somewhere I’ve always wanted to go: I want to visit the Louvre and the pyramids of Egypt

My encouragement or advice to new members would be: We all start somewhere, so make the choice to start, then keep going. Before you know it, one day turns into many and you’ll be doing things you never thought possible. The people here are some of the kindest, funniest, most supportive people you’ll meet. We are family and you won’t regret being a part of it, ever.

Favorite SuperHero?: Its a tie between Wonder Woman and Wolverine

My favorite skill/workout is: I would have to say box jumps because it was my first personal goal I reached.

My favorite memory at FYFA has been: My first challenge, the Fearless Games. I loved seeing everyone pushing themselves and encouraging each other, even if they were on opposing teams.

My favorite Ben-ism is: Not sure if it counts as a Ben-ism, but for some reason, every time I take off for a run, I hear him yell out, “Pick your feet up!”

My diet looks like (Paleo, Zone, Clean Eating, etc.): My diet could definitely use some work, but I try to keep my carbs and caloric intake down.

My favorite food is: Steak and lobster

Something you’d never guess about me is: I’m trying to teach myself to play the ukulele. It’s still a work in progress, but I’ll get it eventually.

The top item on my bucket list is: Travel to as many countries as I can and finish my graduate degree.

Somewhere I’ve always wanted to go: South Africa

My encouragement or advice to new members would be: Don’t compare yourself to anyone else and get discouraged because you’re not as fast or as strong. We all have to start somewhere. Give yourself time to see results. It doesn’t happen over night but if you put in the work, it’ll happen.

Somewhere I’ve always wanted to go: Alaska

Slade Barbosa | July 2017 Featured Member

Slade Is Our Featured Member for July!

Name: Slade King Barbosa

Age: 25

Occupation: Behavioral Therapist

I’ve been a member of Face Your Fears Athletics for:
I have been a member at FYFA since it has opened but started training with Ben back in 2013 at Crossfit Valencia.

My first impression of FYFA was:
When I walked into FYFA it already felt like home in a way. I had been working out with many members and Ben prior. My first impression when it all started at Crossfit Valencia was that of a freshmen going into High School. I had just turned 21 and was probably the youngest member in a gym of what seemed to be people on a whole other level. Unlike high school, it was a welcoming environment and one I didn’t want to walk away from.

My fitness goals are:
I have always wanted to keep getting stronger but also enjoy a bit of cardio. With that in mind I always strive to be able to run longer and harder but yet still be able to squat and dead lift just as much!

My proudest moment or accomplishment at FYFA has been:
I would have to say it would be the recent success in the 2.0 challenge. I have never been afraid of hard work but that put me to the test and I was extremely pleased with the results.

My favorite skill/workout is:
Although we have not done much recently I have always enjoyed ring work, like skin the cat. I am far from good at it but that’s part of why I like it, always challenging.

My favorite memory at FYFA has been:
Any or all of the Grid nights that we have had. The workouts are good and the food after is awesome!

My favorite Ben-ism is:
“And for the 30 second rest period, do forward leaning rest”…….

My diet looks like (Paleo, Zone, Clean Eating, etc.):
Prior to the challenge there wasn’t much of a game plan. Since then I have been following the Zone diet pretty well, minus Friday/Saturday nights.

My favorite food is:
Some good deep dish pizza or Thai food.

Something you’d never guess about me is:
I don’t like sushi, country or rap music… I know, how could one person not like all of those things.

The top item on my bucket list is:
To go dive and see the Great Barrier Reef before it is all bleached out and dead.

Somewhere I’ve always wanted to go:
Australia and or New Zealand

My encouragement or advice to new members would be:
Like a broken record, just stick with it. The first week will be tough but make it back in. After a short month it will be part of each day and you will look forward to it.

Superman or Batman?:
Batman I guess. Seems that he had more toys, money and ladies…

June 2017

Name: Tim Flapper

Occupation: District Sales Manager

I’ve been a member of Face Your Fears Athletics for:
Since Valencia Crossfit to FYFA (2014)

My first impression of FYFA was:
My first impression would have to go back to when FYFA was Valencia Crossfit. I had been going to 24 hour fitness off n on for years, had ran a half marathon, and thought I was in pretty good lifting/workout shape and thought crossfit would be interesting. Upon starting my first free week trial I only made it to 2 classes, because after my first class (which happened to be squat day) it was made apparent that I had no idea how out of shape my total body was in. However strong or in shape I thought I was, I was no where close. From that first week moving forward I had new goals I hadn’t thought about before to attain. Ive been hooked and coming back ever since.

My fitness goals are:
To keep improving on every result. I like noticing my weight increasing on each individual lift. Also to keep getting better at my cardio, it tends to struggle. (see “my diet”)

My proudest moment or accomplishment at FYFA has been:
Completed Murph with strict pull ups

My favorite skill/workout is:
Pull ups and dead lifts

My favorite memory at FYFA has been:
My favorite memory was The beach workout and pizza afterwards.

My favorite Ben-ism is:
My favorite Benism Is when I get told to not let my wife beat me.

My diet looks like (Paleo, Zone, Clean Eating, etc.):
My diet?! Lol. I really only have a diet during challenges. When im not on a challenge it ranges from lots of bbq, fast food and snacks. I eat a lot of cookies and candy :)

My favorite food is:
Pizza and tacos.

Something you’d never guess about me is:
Something most wouldn’t know about me is that I'm a first generation born American. I was the 2nd Flapper born in the USA.

The top item on my bucket list is:
Earn another black belt in a different martial art.

Somewhere I’ve always wanted to go:
I've always wanted to go to Ireland and Italy. Always wanted to visit the Colosseum.

My encouragement or advice to new members would be:
My best advice would be don’t quit after your first week/month. It gets better. Don’t take weeks off also, its like starting over all over again.

Superman or Batman?:
I'm more of an Iron Man/Tony Stark type... but if I had to choose between these 2, I'd have to go with Batman.

Noreen Gordon | May 2017 Featured Member

Name: Noreen Gordon

Age: 51

Occupation: Retired Law Enforcement

I’ve been a member of Face Your Fears Athletics for: Almost 4 years. I started at Crossfit Valencia in August 2013, and followed Ben when he opened FYFA.

My first impression of FYFA was: What a great group of people. Everyone was so encouraging and positive.

My fitness goals are: Continue to increase my strict pull-ups, do an 8 minute 2K row, handstands, and mastering double-unders are a few right now.

My proudest moment or accomplishment at FYFA has been: Strict pull-ups. I got my first strict pull-up at 49 years of age. I had never been able to do them but with Ben’s training I was able to do something I never thought I could.

My favorite skill/workout is: I like TTB because they were in the very first workout when I joined; I saw everyone doing them and thought I would never be able to do even one. My favorite workout, although it’s a love/hate kind of thing, is anything with alternating rounds of rowing or other cardio and lifting.

My favorite memory at FYFA has been: There are way too many to pick just one. Suffice it to say that FYFA is a place I look forward to going to every day. Ben has created an amazing training program and workout environment.

My favorite Ben-ism is: “It’ll be fun!” which I’ve figured out means fun for Ben and pain for us!

My diet looks like (Paleo, Zone, Clean Eating, etc.): All my life I’ve been a pretty healthy eater. I would describe my diet as mostly clean eating and based on Ben’s challenge diet plan. I’m not always super strict but I stick to it 90% of the time.

My favorite food is: changing all the time…sometimes it’s BBQ chicken pizza, then sushi, then Mexican. I love it all!

Something you’d never guess about me is: I love to bake and decorate cakes but I never eat them.

The top item on my bucket list is: It’s a toss up between and RV tour across the US and a motorcycle tour of Ireland and Scotland with my hubby. Both are going to happen at some point!

Somewhere I’ve always wanted to go: Ireland and Scotland

My encouragement or advice to new members would be: Stick with it! It will be hard but your handwork will pay off greatly in results.

Favorite Super Hero: Wonder Woman!

I’ve been a member of Face Your Fears Athletics for:
I started at Valencia Crossfit and followed Ben to FYFA.

My first impression of FYFA was:
Ben is great. He has done a great job with FYFA. He knows what I can and can’t do and pushes me when I need it. I was out for a while with my second ACL replacement and I was really scared that my knee would not do its job. Ben did a great job of helping me out and giving me the confidence to trust my knee again.

My fitness goals are:
Lose another 20 pounds and just tone up everything

My proudest moment or accomplishment at FYFA has been:
Losing the first 20 pounds was good.

My favorite skill/workout is:
Any kettlebell workout.

My favorite memory at FYFA has been:
All the folks at FYFA are amazing, so it makes working out fun.

My favorite Ben-ism is:
I don’t have on yet….

My diet looks like (Paleo, Zone, Clean Eating, etc.):
I am still on RP diet plan. It’s easy enough to stick with and I not hungry all the time.

My favorite food is:
Pizza and Thai food.

Something you’d never guess about me is:
I am related to Frederick Douglass. Famous quote from Frederick Douglass: “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men”.

The top item on my bucket list is:
Go back the school and get a PhD.

Somewhere I’ve always wanted to go:
Switzerland and Australia.

My encouragement or advice to new members would be:
Give it at least 4 weeks. I know it will suck, but if you are ready to commit, you will be rewarded.

Superman or Batman?:
Black Panther, Thor then Superman.

March 2017

March 2017 FYFA Featured Member | Nicole DowningName: Nicole Downing
Age: 39
Occupation: Tax & Financial Planner

I've been a member of Face Your Fears Athletics for:
3 years. Since it began.

My first impression of FYFA was:
Well, I started before it was FYFA, so the first time I walked in and tried what became FYFA, my thought was “I don’t want to get bulky.” I had to rethink everything I’d ever been taught as a fitness freak. I loved the smaller, tight-knit atmosphere. Great people.

My fitness goals are:
I have always wanted to hit the coveted 300 in the deadlift and back quat. Someday I will get there (YEAH B*TCHES!), but even after I do, there are so many other things I still want to work on… I also want to get my speed back with running.

My proudest moment or accomplishment at FYFA has been:
Sticking to this challenge. Although those who know me know that I don’t do anything halfway… Go big or go home! Great challenge, though… Not crazy like some other gyms.

My favorite skill/workout is:
Squats, cleans. Running. Box jumps. My least favorite – TGU’s!

My favorite memory at FYFA has been:
I can’t say there’s one… I really enjoy watching others start and how strong they get… hitting goals they never thought possible. I also love the great people I’ve met. My fellow 6 a.m.-ers and my gym wives, of course. It was also amazing to see everyone come together to get FYFA off the ground in support of our trainer.

My favorite Ben-ism is:
"Add more weight, Jamie!!!" Actually, it’s “Drop the weight, Nicole!”, to which I never listen. Hearing those words gives me the strength to get the weight up. I don’t like being told I can’t do something.

My diet looks like (Paleo, Zone, Clean Eating, etc.):
Right now, the challenge diet. I’ve had a total of 3 cheat meals. 2 of them before and after a half marathon. I’ve been real dedicated to seeing how my body would change. I hope to maintain my results after it is over by keeping up the maintenance plan (whatever that is) but having some cheat meals. I miss wine…. and cheese.

My favorite food is:
My favorite food is Food! I can’t pick just one. Macaroni and cheese, pizza, and burgers, I suppose. None of which I ever eat regularly.

Something you'd never guess about me:
I used to have a REAL bad stutter as a kid that came back as a young adult. I still have to be careful with the pronunciation of certain letters if I am nervous or excited. My brain goes faster than my speech can keep up with…

The top item on my bucket list is:
Continue my education. “Unless you do something beyond what you’ve already mastered, you will never grow” – Ronald E. Osborne

Somewhere I've always wanted to go:
Germany, England... Places in Europe to see historical monuments and museums. I am the ultimate history nerd.

My encouragement or advice to new members would be:
Give it a month. ONE MONTH. I know it sucks at first. I literally HATED it at first. I gave it a month and here I am 4 years later after trying it and I love it… and I’ve done it all… I tell them that I’ve been a gym rat, marathon runner, martial artist, boot camper…. and had the best results here.

Superman or Batman?:

Superman I guess. Need a broader list.

Dennis Orris | FYFA Featured Member February 2017

My first impression of FYFA was:
A place to get a great workout with no distractions. Ben makes his members feel comfortable no matter what their level of fitness is.

My fitness goals are:
I want to lose another 10 to 15 pounds and improve my deadlift.

My proudest moment or accomplishment at FYFA has been:
Finishing my first Murph.

My favorite skill/workout is:
Anything with burpees.

My favorite memory at FYFA has been:
Meeting new people. Every person I've met at FYF has been great. The members all support and encourage one another.

My favorite Ben-ism is:
Usually him telling me to keep my head up when rowing and deadlifting.

My diet looks like (Paleo, Zone, Clean Eating, etc.):
A tapestry of nightmares with the occasional healthy meal in between.

My favorite food is:
Fried chicken.

Something you'd never guess about me:
I've written eight screenplays and love movies.

The top item on my bucket list is:
To have one of my scripts produced into a film.

Janet Bushton | Jan. 2017 Featured Member

Name: Janet Bushton

Age: 54

Occupation: California Fitness Source, Inc. Self-employed. Basically my job is whatever my husband doesn’t feel like doing!

I’ve been a member of Face Your Fears Athletics for:
From the very beginning! Coming up on 3 years.

My first impression of FYFA was:
I liked the warehouse, no frills environment, but it's really the members. Can’t find a better group of people.

My fitness goals are:
Oddly, as I get older, I am picking up the pace in working out. I thought I would slow down, but that has not happened yet. I intend to keep on it for as long as I can - until its no longer a choice.

My proudest moment or accomplishment at FYFA has been:
Probably strict pullups. Talk about years in the making. Never been able to do a pullup and a kipping pullup was a huge accomplishment. Ben is good at assessing your abilities and raises your "bar" when its time. He knew I could even though I protested. Now there is no turning back!

My favorite skill/workout is:
I like "chipper" workouts. I know how to pace myself and not burnout out of the gate.

My favorite memory at FYFA has been:
Most recently, Ben hosted a benefit grid workout for a member who fell on tough times. That was very commendable. So many members, and members from other crossfit boxes, came out to support this family in need. Family takes care of family. Doesn’t get any more important than that.

My favorite Ben-ism is:
Oh I can hear it… he casually says "Yea… it’ll be fun!” That’s a warning!

My diet looks like (Paleo, Zone, Clean Eating, etc.):
Mostly clean... basically no dairy, no fried foods, no refined sugar, and no caffeine, no processed foods. (Basically)

My favorite food is:
This is counter to the above… my favorite food is my homemade chocolate chip cookies. Just one of my weaknesses…

Something you’d never guess about me is:
Sometimes I take a bath because its hard to drink wine in the shower.

The top item on my bucket list is:
Vacation home on the beach, on a lake, or in the mountains. Still working on that!

Somewhere I’ve always wanted to go:
Seychelles and Mauritius

My encouragement or advice to new members would be:
There is no magic pill to being fit. You make a conscious decision to invest your time and energy - EVEN WHEN YOU DO NOT FEEL LIKE IT. Usually that’s when I have my best workouts. I can assure you, you are never disappointed in yourself for having done your workout. Rewards go way beyond just how you look. Its all a choice. Can’t say it’s easy, but definitely worth the effort in the long run. You will not be alone in the journey.

Superman or Batman?:
Um, really?

I’ve been a member of Face Your Fears Athletics for:
Two years nine months. Since the beginning!

My first impression of FYFA was:
This is the gym for me. I had trained under Ben before and I could see that he was building something special at Face Your Fears Athletics.

My fitness goals are:
To burn enough calories to drink beer… But seriously I’m in better shape now than when I was in my early 20’s. I want to continue to perform at a high level for as long as my body will allow it. Training every day will ensure that time does not come for a very long time.

My proudest moment or accomplishment at FYFA has been:
My first year I competed in the Murph Challenge and had a respectable time. The next year I had an injury and was kind of feeling sorry for myself. I wasn’t coming to the gym regularly and my diet went to hell. My time went down about 10 minutes. This year I trained hard and competed in one of Ben’s challenges and I did Murph in less than 40 minutes. Next year I look forward to stepping up and completing Murph with a weight vest. Also, running a mile under 6 minutes.

My favorite skill/workout is:
Most people at the gym would probably assume it would be running because I’m good at it, but truth be told, I hate running. I’d have to say my favorite workouts are anything associated with the Torn Tank Workouts we do on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. Bench, push-ups, and pull-ups to name a few.

My favorite memory at FYFA has been:
Too many to count. After a long day at work the hour I spend in the gym with Ben and the members is one of my favorites in the day.

My favorite Ben-ism is:
“Come on Vincent” Haha. He knows when I’m dogging it.

My diet looks like (Paleo, Zone, Clean Eating, etc.):
Zone when I’m good.

My favorite food is:
Pizza, Burgers, IPA, IPA, and IPA. Did I mention I like beer?

Something you’d never guess about me is:
I love Disney animated movies. I own most of them on DVD.

The top item on my bucket list is:
Visit all 50 States

Somewhere I’ve always wanted to go:
As mentioned above I would love to visit all the states in the US. We live in a beautiful country and there is so much to see.

My encouragement or advice to new members would be:
Do not be intimidated. Every person has different fitness goals and levels. When I started working out with Ben I went to your standard big box gym. I ran a few times a week and lifted about an hour 3-4 times a week. Training under Ben was difficult at first because I thought I was in good shape. It’s not that I wasn’t in shape, but Ben will always push you to achieve more. The members at FYF athletics are very encouraging and will help you achieve your fitness goals.

Superman or Batman?:
John Wayne pilgrim.

Name: Tommy Onda

Age: 26

Occupation: Wannabe police officer

I’ve been a member of Face Your Fears Athletics for:
2 years.

My first impression of FYFA was:
I wasn't sure if I was out of shape or all of the members were freaks of nature! Everyone was really welcoming. Ben was the first coach that I made contact with that really knew his stuff.

My fitness goals are:
I’d say my fitness goal is to maintain the highest level of fitness so I can pursue my passions outside of the gym and a career in law enforcement.

My proudest moment or accomplishment at FYFA has been:
Meeting some really good people is really what stands out to me.

My favorite skill/workout is:
I really like kettle bell work and the long grinder workouts that test me mentally.

My favorite memory at FYFA has been:
Too many to name… and probably not appropriate in this setting.

My favorite Ben-ism is:
Not sure what my favorite Ben-ism is but the dude has a noteworthy caboose!

My diet looks like (Paleo, Zone, Clean Eating, etc.):
Weekdays: I’m a RP guy
Weekends: Jack Daniels, Cigars, Mcdonalds, Wendys, etc. etc.

My favorite food is:
Sushi is my go to.

Something you’d never guess about me is:
I’m terrified of heights.

The top item on my bucket list is:
Learn to sky dive without the lame instructor strapped to your back. At least thats what it is at the moment. Kinda funny considering the question previous to this one.

Somewhere I’ve always wanted to go:
Grand Teton National Park

My encouragement or advice to new members would be:

  1. Have realistic expectations/goals
  2. Make friends
  3. Have fun with it
  4. Stick with it

Superman or Batman?:
Neither… Daddy D is my superhero!

My favorite Ben-ism is:
Have I HEARD any Ben-isms?

My diet looks like (Paleo, Zone, Clean Eating, etc.):
I TRY to stick to Paleo/Clean Eating... but it’s a daily battle.

The top item on my bucket list is:
Another trip to Maui during whale season.

Italy

My encouragement or advice to new members would be:
YOU CAN DO THIS! Be ready for sore muscles and hard work, but the friendships and knowledge you will gain are lifelong. You will be surprised at what you are able to accomplish, at ANY AGE! All you really have to do is show up for an hour at a time. The results are so worth it!

Superman or Batman?:
Superman! (Who would want to live in a cave?)

Krista Nolan | Sep. 2016 Featured Member

Name: Krista Nolan

Age: 27

Occupation: Senior Park Aide at Hungry Valley SVRA

I’ve been a member of Face Your Fears Athletics for:
A little over a year now!

My first impression of FYFA was:
I was genuinely terrified. Gary and I had peeked inside and the first thing I saw was Nicole. Nicole was front squatting and she had just finished her rep, she yelled and then threw the weight down… I believe my jaw dropped.

My fitness goals are:
To keep pushing and challenging myself.

My proudest moment or accomplishment at FYFA has been:
When I was finally able to complete a workout, and when I was able to complete a mile without stopping. Another one of my proudest moments was actually outside of FYFA when I was able to utilize the tools that I acquired in something that meant a lot to me.

My favorite skill/workout is:
Really any workout, I like the challenges that each one brings... except wall balls….I hate wall balls.

My favorite memory at FYFA has been:
The friends that I have gained and watching us all grow and endure these workouts together.

My favorite Ben-ism is:
When Ben is sipping his coffee while I am sweating my ass off and out of breath. It just cracks me up or when he shows us demos of what we are supposed to be doing and does it with his coffee in hand. He makes it look so easy.

My diet looks like (Paleo, Zone, Clean Eating, etc.):
Jack In T…..ahhh just kidding. I have eaten better this past year than I have my whole life; more chicken and less fast food it is still not where it should be but way better than it was.

My favorite food is:
Italian food and dessert. I love anything and everything pasta. Sweets are my weakness. Give me anything sweet and I can’t resist. I’m strong but not that strong.

Something you’d never guess about me is:
My freshman year I fell in love with the snare drum. I started drumming then later I became 2nd chair on my high school drumline.

The top item on my bucket list is:
I would loooove to play with a tiger. I have loved tigers since I was a kid.

Somewhere I’ve always wanted to go:
Europe, Ireland, and Egypt. There are way too many places to pick from but I would love to explore and experience everything this world has to offer.

My encouragement or advice to new members would be:
Keep pushing through it. Put in what you want to get out of it. It was such a struggle for me when I started and when I didn’t want to go I had every excuse but keep pushing through it and you won’t believe the transformation you will have not only physically but mentally. You will be proud of yourself. I was scared when I first started but then I faced my fears and I have never been in this good of shape in my life and now I am addicted!

Superman or Batman?:
I am a Deadpool kinda gal!

Kevin Amick | Aug. 2016 Featured Member

Name: Kevin Amick

Age: 35

Occupation: RN

I’ve been a member of Face Your Fears Athletics for:
2 years. Ben was coaching me back in the CF Valencia days, too.

My first impression of FYFA was:
I’m in the right place.

My fitness goals are:
Evolving. Day 1 for me was a strict pull-up. Today, day 703, I just want a CLEAN, heavy clean!

My proudest moment or accomplishment at FYFA has been:
I think for me it would have to be hitting that 7min 2k on the rower. It was the first time I ever felt like I had achieved something actually considered “athletic,” if that makes any sense.

My favorite skill/workout is:
I like those tough burners. Give me a 30 minute AMRAP with the barbell and some plyo-work ANY TIME! I LOVE THAT SHIT!

My favorite memory at FYFA has been:
Everyone turning out for the comp last year. It was my first athletic competition and, even though I didn’t win anything, it felt like a huge win for us all as a gym. Everyone was there supporting each other and pushing us all to the brink of our limits. It was awesome!

My favorite Ben-ism is:
Anytime we’re in Bend-ability and he tells us some new way to contort our bodies but says it in a way that is supposed to make it sound easy…

My diet looks like (Paleo, Zone, Clean Eating, etc.):
I mostly eat the same things over and over and it is always a meat, a green veggie, and a starch of some kind. Light to moderate snackcidents at least once or twice a week. I would say my diet stays on-point about 60-75% of the time.

My favorite food is:
Ice cream!

Something you’d never guess about me is:
Most people are shocked that I am such a homebody. I don’t really like big crowds, loud restaurants, drinking, etc… Give me my cozy home, the husband, 2 fur-babies and a movie over all that jazz any day.

The top item on my bucket list is:
Spend a year touring the country in a big RV!

Somewhere I’ve always wanted to go:
Europe.

My encouragement or advice to new members would be:
Never, ever give up on the “You” you want to become. I spent my entire life wanting to be fit, healthy, in shape, etc…but I never had the intestinal fortitude to tough out the real hard work. That is until Crossfit came into my life. It scared hell out of me some days and for about the first year and a half I think every part of my body hurt, but I knew that this was the type of environment where I could start to see the results I wanted. Set a goal and focus on that goal like a laser until it’s yours. If you can do that, then your fitness goals will happen. Catching the laser, on the other hand… well, I’ll let you know when I figure that part out!

Superman or Batman?:
Superman, no doubt!

Gary Hughey | July 2016 Featured Member

Name: Gary Hughey

Age: 61 (Senior citizen later this year, be ready to do the burpees)

Occupation: Park Ranger

I've been a member of Face Your Fears Athletics for:
Since day 1 when Ben opened Face Your Fears. I was actually up at Heavy Metal when Ben started his first day sometime back in 2013. I remember interviewing him for that position. So not only am I the longest active member, I’m the most senior male.

My first impression of FYFA was:
Face Your Fears girls, functional beauty in motion.

My fitness goals are:
Basically to be able to handle whatever the day throws at me. Last week I stopped to push a car off the freeway. Be able to respond to that rescue, keep moving in the heat, and basically be fit enough to make my Rangers and the public feel safe when I’m at work.

My proudest moment or accomplishment at FYFA has been:
My proudest moments have been influencing others to get back in shape, watching each of you accomplish your goals and lately watching Krista hit hers. My proudest accomplishment was the day Ben told me to stop using the band for pull-ups, which was a big day for me.

My favorite skill/workout is:
Those named after Seals. The 12 days of Christmas always gets me in a festive mood.

My favorite memory at FYFA has been:
The Grand Opening day. I had the privilege of meeting Ben’s parents, his mom was especially proud of him for his accomplishments.

My favorite Ben-ism is:
Maybe not my favorite, but “That’s too heavy!” directed at me.

My diet looks like (Paleo, Zone, Clean Eating, etc.):
No fair food. I try to not drink calories and really limit the sweets; however I do have a treat now and then.

My favorite food is:
Fair Food. When I used to teach elementary school, I took my students on a field trip to the Fair. Our extra credit question was to name at least 10 food items sold on a stick.

Something you’d never guess about me is:
I’m from the mid-west, Indiana. We moved out here in 1959. My first trip to Disneyland was when the park was fairly new, 1957. They had individual tickets for each ride back then.

The top item on my bucket list is:
A motorcycle tour in Patagonia to photograph the countryside Galen Rowell style. I’m a fairly accomplished amateur.

Somewhere I've always wanted to go:
I spent a couple of years working at Bodie State Historic Park. The winters there were very cold and dry. The five of us who lived in town during the winter celebrated the first snow by sitting down together and watching “The Shining”. The walk over to Mark’s house, about 150 feet or so got me thinking about Antarctica and the ropes that they use for you to follow between the out-buildings. It was snowing with white out conditions. The snow was about waist deep and at times, I had to literally fall forward due to it being too difficult to walk through (and yes I had snowshoes on.) After about 15 minutes I finally kept pushing forward and saw a dim light and walked towards it. Luckily it was Mark’s house. We sat down for the annual viewing of the Shining. Afterwards, it was back home to my two story 1850’s haunted house for a quiet evening. So now I want to experience Antarctica.

My encouragement or advice to new members would be:
I was just reading a good book the other day and it reminded me of some really good advice that my parents and others tried to teach me when I was a kid. And that was the Golden Rule. “Whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them”. Fitness advice: Warm-up, recovery, discipline and work hard.

Superman or Batman?:
Superman of course, the protector of mankind from evil forces.

June 2016

Ben Rumple | June 2016 Featured Member

Name: Ben Rumple

Age: 35

Occupation: Information Security

I've been a member of Face Your Fears Athletics for:
Approximately 11 months.

My first impression of FYFA was:
I recall my first class being a real wake-up call to just how out of shape I was. I was impressed with the team atmosphere at FYFA and the personalized attention each client receives.

My fitness goals are:
My primary goal is to obtain a "reasonable base" level of fitness commensurate with my age/gender and to maintain that fitness level.

My proudest moment or accomplishment at FYFA has been:
My proudest moment was reaching my weight loss goal during one of the challenge periods. I also significantly improved my performance during this same period. This accomplishment really solidified the idea that proper nutrition is critical to performance.

My favorite skill/workout is:
Rowing is my favorite because it is the one skill I seem to excel at, if for no other reason than I am tall.

My favorite memory at FYFA has been:
I think the final few one-on-one training sessions I completed were my favorite because that was when I realized for the first time that I probably could make it through a normal workout.

My favorite Ben-ism is:
One of two that go something like this: "This is a dictatorship..." or "We are going to have fun today..."

My diet looks like (Paleo, Zone, Clean Eating, etc.):
Currently using a modified RP Diet.

My favorite food is:
Pizza is my vice.

The top item on my bucket list is:
Trek to Everest Base Camp.

Somewhere I've always wanted to go:
Mt. Everest.

My encouragement or advice to new members would be:
Focus on form, not weight, and remain consistent in your participation.

Superman or Batman?:
Batman.

Katie Figueroa | May 2016 Featured Member

Name: Katie Figueroa

Age: 32

Occupation: Internet Marketing Manager

I’ve been a member of Face Your Fears Athletics for:
7.5 months

My first impression of FYFA was:
My husband had been going to the gym for over a year and a half when I first joined, and he would always tell me about the workouts every day, which at the time sounded very intimidating. I thought how could I ever get through one of those? Now I come into the gym and I don’t even fret the workout. I just show up and do my best. Also, I was surprised by how quickly I was made to feel included and a part of the gym community. Everyone was very welcoming and it quickly felt like I’d be working out with these people forever when in reality it had only been a couple weeks.

My fitness goals are:
In the beginning, my goal was to lose the weight that I had gained, which I’m so happy to say I’ve done, but now I also want to get toner, leaner, stronger, lift heavier and to be able to do a freakin pull up without a band!

My proudest moment or accomplishment at FYFA has been:
When I ran a mile in about 8 minutes and 30 seconds, when I dropped over 40 seconds on my repeatability test and when I got my first kipping pullup!

My favorite skill/workout is:
Box jumps and the Grid!

My favorite memory at FYFA has been:
All of the grid workouts…especially when my team wins!

My favorite Ben-ism is:
The bendability playlist. And, centaur ass.

My diet looks like (Paleo, Zone, Clean Eating, etc.):
These days it’s all about that Renaissance Periodization life!

My favorite food is:
Pizza, wine, cookies, ice cream, sushi, In & Out and french fries! Sadly, we don’t hang out that much anymore, but we’ll always be best friends.

Something you’d never guess about me is:
I am excellent at singing Coolio’s Gangster’s Paradise at Karaoke

The top item on my bucket list is:
I want to hug a panda!

Somewhere I’ve always wanted to go:
There are so many places in so many different areas of the world I want to go, but as I am writing this I’d really like to go wine tasting throughout France and then hang out on the beach in the French Riviera.

My encouragement or advice to new members would be:
Don’t be afraid, especially those who haven’t done these types of workout before. Everyone starts somewhere and you should always only measure your success in the gym against yourself. You aren’t competing against anyone else. Most importantly, set goals for yourself, work hard and have fun! You can do anything—lift heavier, lose weight, run fast, squat deeper—if you put in the time and effort and you have the drive and determination to get it done. Believe in yourself and never give up.

Superman or Batman?:
Superman, duh. But only if it’s Henry Cavill :)

Age:

Occupation:
Self employed- auto body repair

I’ve been a member of Face Your Fears Athletics for:
1year 6 months

My first impression of FYFA was:
Where are all the mirrors? You guys don't stare at yourselves while you workout?? Gym is very clean. Equipment is great. Members are very down to earth and encouraging. Ben treated me with respect and cared about all my concerns and goals.

My fitness goals are:
In the beginning my only goal was to be more
healthy, my father had died at 50 of a heart attack and I didn't want that to happen to me . But now my goals have changed, it's more about pushing myself. Once I started hitting my fitness goals I started applying that mindset to work and family with great success. FYFA is where I practice the habit of making and achieving goals. It has changed how I approach life...Fear nothing!

My proudest moment or accomplishment at FYFA has been:
Deadlifting over 300lbs the first time. 400lbs here I come! Also the first time I kept up with Nicole, that lady is crazy strong!

My favorite skill/workout is:
Bent over rows and deadlift

My favorite memory at FYFA has been:
Tommy doing the speed ladder was frickin’ awesome.

My favorite Ben-ism is:
I work out at 6am, so my brain is turned off...all I hear is a combination of the following phrases "everyone make a circle", " squat hold", "30 more seconds", "go", "Yes you can", "Tony front squat not back squat", "Good work everyone"

My diet looks like (Paleo, Zone, Clean Eating, etc.):
RP is the only way to fly!

My favorite food is:
Mexican

Something you’d never guess about me is:
This white boy can dance!

The top item on my bucket list is:
swim with dolphins

Somewhere I’ve always wanted to go:
Japan

My encouragement or advice to new members would be:
Take it from me, I know what it's like to struggle with weight and staying on any fitness program. You have to commit yourself and believe in Ben, he will get you where you wanna go. Don't give up, treat it like brushing your teeth, do you ever not do that? Also, know your weaknesses. Have trouble with junk food or eating out to much? Get on a diet where you meal prep a whole week in advance. If you have food ready everyday you’re less likely to freak out and end up at IN-and-Out. Have a hard time making it to the gym? Sign up for classes a week before, for some reason once you reserve your spot, you are more likely to show.

Superman or Batman?:
I am all about Deadpool

Tommy doing the speed ladder was frickin’ awesome.

Occupation:
Technical Support at Boston Scientific Neuromodulation

I’ve been a member of Face Your Fears Athletics for:
7 months strong.

My first impression of FYFA was:
I’ll admit that I was intimidated once I first stepped in. Fitness has never been my comfort zone; but, everyone was quick to welcome me and support me. You won’t find that at any other gym.

My fitness goals are:
To remain active at least 5 days a week, improve upper body strength, and to beat Dave at something.

My proudest moment or accomplishment at FYFA has been:
Just making the commitment to workout to improve myself was my proudest moment; but, if that doesn’t count, then running a sub-8 minute mile was awesome.

My favorite skill/workout is:
Pull-ups or 100m sprints.

My favorite memory at FYFA has been:
All the team grid workouts on Saturdays. Anyone reading this needs to come to those. They’re seriously a great workout and a ton of fun.

My favorite Ben-ism is:
When he smiles and says that it’s his favorite workout/warm-up, but then it’s torture for everyone who has to do it.

My diet looks like (Paleo, Zone, Clean Eating, etc.):
I’m a carnivore. Mostly chicken and protein shakes.

My favorite food is:
I love Korean BBQ or really crappy chinese food.

Something you’d never guess about me is:
I like to collect novelty socks; but, I rarely wear them.

The top item on my bucket list is:
To see the Northern Lights.

Somewhere I’ve always wanted to go:
Tokyo, Japan.

My encouragement or advice to new members would be:
Throw away all fear of being judged for your fitness level and/or your physique. We’re all here to improve ourselves and everyone starts somewhere. Make a commitment to self-improvement and put in the effort - it’ll be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make.

Here’s my favorite inspirational quote:
“Man cannot remake himself without suffering, for he is both the marble and the sculptor.” - Alex Carrel

Don’t quit. Your hard work will pay off. Face your fears.
