As we start off this first day of the new year, many of us are compiling
a list of resolutions. Usually this list includes heading to a gym, which
ends up only lasting a few weeks before it gets old or you lose your commitment.
It is at this point that it becomes you against yourself.
Ask yourself these questions:
- “Why do I want to go to the gym?”
- “Why is it that this ends up on my list of resolutions every year?
Is it to lose weight? Get stronger? Be healthier so that I can keep up
with my non-stop toddler?”
No one can answer these questions for you, just as no one can do the work
for you. It has to be YOU that decides to take that first step, and the
second, and the third to the gym each day. This is exactly what Kathy
did in April 2013 when she walked into our CrossFit gym in Santa Clarita.
Here is her story…
After three marathons, a dozen or so half marathons and a torn meniscus,
my knees and my doctor suggested I hang up my running shoes.
Early in 2013, at age 60, I secretly began researching and reading about
CrossFit and I kept coming back to the phrase “everything can be
scaled to the ability of each athlete.” I gathered my nerves and
sent an email to Ben asking about “senior” classes. He quickly
replied that although there are no “senior” classes, “everything
can be scaled to the ability of each athlete.”
I signed up and walked into my first class April 2, 2013—scared,
nervous, intimidated, overweight, older than the others. But I knew if
I sat home doing nothing… nothing would change. It’s a fact.
It’s that simple.
Fast forward to 2014. Because of Ben and Face Your Fears Athletics, I am
stronger, healthier and feel better than I have in many, many years. Because
of CrossFit and healthy eating choices, I am down 40 pounds. In all my
years of running, I didn’t have the strength my body has now. Ben
and CrossFit made the difference for me. He gives the attention, support,
encouragement and interest far beyond what I had ever expected. He always
checked on me during those early WODs, making sure I was okay. I was always
last to finish (and I am STILL usually last) but the support of Ben and
the family at CFFYF has never wavered.
I still have goals of more weight loss, but the strength and muscle I’ve
gained are what keep me coming back. The overall attitude and friendly,
supportive atmosphere at CFFYF are unsurpassed. I can’t imagine
where I’d be had I not faced my fears back in April 2013. I learned
you’re never too old or out of shape to step out of your comfort
zone to try something new.
Kathy faced her fears and has never looked back. She is now doing things
she never thought possible, like back-squatting almost 200lbs, keeping
up with and lifting more than some of our members half her age, and I
have no doubt she will get an unassisted kipping pull up in 2015. It is
such a privilege to watch Kathy and the other members of our CFFYF family
reach their goals, not just once a year, but all year long.
While we would all love for there to be a quick fix to get you to your
fitness or weight loss goals, the reality is, there isn’t. The fact
is, it takes time, dedication and hard work. It’s a lifelong commitment,
not just 30, 60 or 90 days. This lifelong commitment to fitness is what
we strive for here at Face Your Fears Athletics.
Our program is tailored to everyone, to help everyone improve, no matter
their goals and how they differ. It is also structured for consistent
improvement, even for our fittest of members. We go through both strength
and endurance cycles, to ensure that everyone gets a well-rounded fitness
program and never gets bored or in a rut.
